History
As one of the most populous counties in Florida and the focal point of the Tampa Bay Metropolitan Area, Hillsborough County has played a pivotal role in the state’s development. The county’s first significant European settlement was Fort Brooke, a major military installation that eventually became the town site for the future city of Tampa.
In fact, Tampa served as an important port city and army encampment during the Spanish-American War. Today, local institutions like the University of South Florida and the Tampa Bay History Center devote tremendous amounts of time and resources to the study of this important conflict.
During the years that followed World War II, outlying rural areas of Hillsborough County began to give way to encroaching suburban development. In particular, the land on either side of Interstate 4 has become a major bedroom community for nearby employment centers like Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
Geography
Like many counties in Florida, Hillsborough County is crisscrossed by a network of inland waterways. Since much of its population is clustered around Tampa and the surrounding communities, it’s actually home to a number of nearly pristine open areas. These include Alafia River State Park and Hillsborough River State Park. Aside from these watery areas and the large expanse of Tampa Bay to the south and east, Hillsborough County is generally devoid of hills or other distinctive geographical features.
Population and Demographics
According to the 2010 Census, Hillsborough County is Florida’s fourth-largest county by population. With a rapidly-growing population of nearly 1.3 million souls, it may soon overtake Palm Beach County and become the state’s third-largest. Much of the county’s population lives in Tampa and the communities that surround the city to the north and east. Demographically, the county is a microcosm of the United States and is widely considered to be one of Florida’s most dynamic political subdivisions. With nearly 30 percent of its residents holding four-year college degrees, it’s also regarded as one of the state’s “smartest” places.
Things to Do in Hillsborough County, Florida
As one of Florida’s most cosmopolitan places, Hillsborough County offers a range of opportunities for locals and tourists alike. High-culture buffs have a wealth of institutions at their disposal. Notable theaters and art galleries include the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, the Gorilla Theatre and the Tampa Theatre.
Shoppers and diners gravitate to nightlife districts like downtown Tampa, suburban Ybor City and Tampa’s trendy SoHo neighborhood. Meanwhile, major-league sports fans have three teams from which to choose: football’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays and hockey’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Finally, water-sports enthusiasts have a nearly endless banquet of recreational opportunities on nearby Tampa Bay.
Climate and Weather
Like all of Florida, Hillsborough County has a subtropical climate that’s characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, pleasant winters. Although the threat of thunderstorms is constant, even the cloudiest days tend to feature a few breaks of sun. While temperatures regularly exceed 90 degrees during Hillsborough County’s long summers, the area rarely sees significant snowfall or frost. When cold snaps do occur, they can devastate the local citrus crop and engender millions of dollars in economic losses. Fortunately, these events occur infrequently. Unsurprisingly, dangerous heat waves are far more common here. As such, homeowners and business owners have no choice but to buy high-quality air conditioners and ensure that their devices remain in top form throughout the year.
