Pinellas County, FL AC Repair & Service

History

Located on a strategic peninsula that juts out into the mouth of Tampa Bay, Pinellas County, Florida is one of the state’s most historically-significant counties. Once home to the legendary Tocobaga Native American tribe and the site of numerous burial and temple mounds, the county was also one of the first areas of Florida to be settled by Europeans. In the 1830s, U.S. troops constructed sprawling Fort Harrison to defend the mouth of the nearby bay from Spanish cruisers. In fact, the area would continue to be an area of strategic importance through the Spanish-American War.

Today, Pinellas County boasts a mixture of suburban, urban and semi-rural environments. After the completion of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge opened the peninsula up to development, St. Petersburg and the communities that anchor southern Pinellas County began to grow at a tremendous rate. For a time, Clearwater was the fastest-growing city in the country. Today, downtown St. Petersburg has evolved into a major nightlife and shopping destination for locals and tourists alike.

Geography

Pinellas County is surrounded by water on three sides. To the west, the Gulf of Mexico stretches as far as they eye can see. To the northeast, Old Tampa Bay separates the central and northern reaches of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. To the south and east, the main body of Tampa Bay separates St. Petersburg from Tampa proper, Bradenton, and suburban areas of Manatee County. As one of Florida’s smaller counties by area, Pinellas County is quite densely-populated. Although most of its land has been developed, there are a few open areas that remain in its northeastern corner.

Population and Demographics

According to the 2010 Census, Pinellas County is home to about 920,000 people. Many of its inhabitants were born in other parts of the United States and moved to the county in search of mild winter weather. Pinellas County is also a mecca for immigrants and has attracted thousands of families from South East Asia, Cuba and Eastern Europe. The county’s population is projected to continue growing at a rapid rate in the coming years.
