You don’t want to spend more than you need to on cooling here in Pinellas County, FL. However, you have probably noticed that your energy bill is going up, and you may not know the reason for it. Below, we’ll give you three possible explanations for the abnormal increase in your AC costs.
1. Dirty AC Filter and Coils
You want your AC components to be as free of dirt and debris as possible. The filter in your return vent helps to this end, but if you don’t replace it regularly, it will let pollutants enter the air handler and coat the evaporator coil. A dirty evaporator coil won’t absorb heat, which means lukewarm air, longer cycles and greater energy use.
A dirty condenser coil in the compressor won’t release heat outside. This will prevent your home from getting cool and will lead to abnormally long AC cycles.
2. Uncalibrated Thermostat
Without the occasional calibration, your thermostat will inaccurately read your indoor temperature. Your energy bill may be rising, then, because the thermostat thinks your home is warmer than it is and turns the AC on when it shouldn’t.
3. Dirty or Leaking Ducts
Air ducts can leak a great deal of your cool air, lengthening each cycle and costing you more each month. Or they can get clogged with debris, reduce airflow and force the AC fan and motor to work harder to circulate air. This is why many HVAC companies offer duct cleaning and sealing.
