You walk in your home and are met with a smell not unlike dirty socks. You follow your nose through your home to its source: your HVAC system. If you notice any of these three HVAC symptoms, your unit is in need of some TLC at the hands of professional HVAC technicians.

Higher Utility Costs

Your HVAC system may be in need of some TLC if you notice a sudden spike in your utility costs. Utility costs can rise for a number of reasons, but since your HVAC system is a prime contributor to those energy costs, it’s a good bet that if something is off with your bills, something is likely off with your system. Watch for consistently high utility costs across a few months, especially when coupled with other HVAC problems.

Reduced Comfort and Efficiency

Is your AC suddenly taking much longer to cool down your home? Does your system seem to run much longer than it did before, despite your thermostat sitting at the same setting? These issues may be a sign that your HVAC system’s efficiency is down, making it more difficult for the unit to keep your home comfortable. Reduced efficiency is often a result of strain placed on the system by faulty, worn, or broken components within the unit.

Strange Sounds and Smells

One of the most telltale signs that your HVAC system needs maintenance is out-of-the-ordinary sounds and smells. It’s never good to hear bangs or screeches coming from your air conditioner, which may indicate a broken or loose component or a worn belt that’s ready to snap. You should also worry if you notice a smell like dirty socks, your drain pan may be holding water rather than having it go down the condensate line.

If you’ve noticed any of these three symptoms, or anything else that seems out of the ordinary with your HVAC system, you need to schedule preventive maintenance with a licensed HVAC technician. To give your HVAC unit the TLC it needs, call Senica Air Conditioning, Inc. at 866-881-5935.
