On the list of requirements for living comfortably in Tampa FL, air conditioning ranks pretty high. It’s right up there with sunscreen, shorts and frozen beverages. The science behind how air conditioning works isn’t complicated, but it sure is effective. On a historical note, the modern air conditioning industry got its start in 1902 when Willis Carrier figured out a way to remove excess humidity by cooling the air inside a printing plant. Based on the success of the process, he started Carrier Engineering Corp. More than 100 years later, the brand remains a top-rated supplier of residential and commercial heating and air conditioning systems.
How Air Conditioning Works
Carrier’s original idea was simple: If you can heat air by passing it over or through hot coils, then you should be able to use cold coils to cool air. Modern refrigerants and machinery make today’s systems more energy efficient, but the scientific process of transferring heat is essentially the same. A compressor pumps refrigerant gas into the condenser coils. Outside air is blown across the coils to absorb heat from the refrigerant as it converts to a liquid. The liquid refrigerant is then pushed into the evaporator coils. Indoor air is forced across evaporator coils, which cool the air and collect some of the humidity. The chilled air is then blown back through the duct system and into the rooms. The heat transfer returns the refrigerant to a gas, which is pumped back to the compressor to begin the process again.
How to Extend the Life of an Air Conditioner
Nobody wants to deal with an unreliable heating or cooling system, but many people don’t realize the importance of ongoing maintenance. The unit needs a clean filter every month plus annual service checks. Florida’s long, hot, humid summers make routine maintenance even more critical. During the preventive maintenance appointment, the service technician cleans the components and checks for loose or worn parts. By heading off potential problems at the beginning of the season, you reduce your chances of experiencing a system outage in the middle of a heat wave. Sign up for a maintenance agreement to further help with budgeting for routine ac maintenance and repairs.
