If you do not have an energy strategy in your Tampa-Clearwater area home, you will see your energy bills soar as fast as the temperatures rise. A programmable thermostat will help you make your strategy easier to implement.
Here are a few tips for ensuring your programmable thermostat will save you money throughout the summer months:
- Be sure the thermostat is installed in an optimal location. It should be away from heat-producing items such as heat registers, fireplaces and appliances such as dishwashers and stoves. It needs to be out of direct sun all the time. That means away from windows, doors and skylights. It should be on an interior wall. Placing it on an exterior wall will cause the system to cycle abnormally, compromising your home comfort.
- Program your thermostat according to your regular schedule. If your family is away most of the day from Monday through Friday, there’s no need to cool the house to comfortable levels during this time. Before you wake up in the morning or get home at night, the programmable thermostat can adjust the cooling system back to comfortable levels. The longer you keep the thermostat at energy saving levels, the lower your energy bills will be.
- Use a programmable thermostat’s override and hold features only when necessary. If you are home for a sick day or need to be home for the plumber, use the temporary override to get the house comfortable while you’re home. The regular schedule will take over later. If you are going to be away fro the weekend, use the “hold” feature to keep the temperature at an energy saving level while you’re gone.
This is why a programmable thermostat needs to be part of your summer energy savings strategy.
