History

Historians estimate Native Americans lived in and around Pasco County as early as 10,000 B.C. The first European settlers journeyed into western Florida in the 16th century, but the area remained unincorporated until 1887, when Pasco County was founded. Residents quickly demanded that the eastern and western parts of the county separate due to the distance between the county seat and other areas. The issue was finally resolved with the construction of government buildings in both Dade City and New Port Richey.

Geography

Most cities in Pasco County are located in a sub-tropical climate and enjoy moderate temperatures during the winter and slightly warmer temperatures during the summer. The area is composed of marshes, wetlands, wildlife preserves and coastal beaches. As such, it is attractive to visitors who enjoy a wide variety of outdoors experiences. The county lies 50 miles west of Orlando and 30 miles north of Tampa, making it easy to get to by plane or by rail.

The Local Population

Thanks to a strong economy and relatively low cost of living, Pasco County has grown significantly since the 1960s. The county is comprised of six cities and nearly 500,000 residents. Most of the area’s residents work in private industry, though many are retired. A handful of Pasco County residents also work in local and state government and for law enforcement agencies in the area.

Attractions, Diversions and Entertainment

Pasco County boasts many different recreation and entertainment options for tourists and residents alike. The county hosts many special events and festivals, including a rodeo and festivals that celebrate Native American culture. The annual Kumquat Festival celebrates the area’s history as a citrus producing region while offering attendees the opportunity to enjoy the Old Florida lifestyle.

Pasco County also boasts diverse shopping and dining opportunities. Visitors can wander through the many shops of West Port Richey, Dade City and Wesley Chapel. A flea market in West Port Richey is a popular location for bargain hunters and individuals who want to spend time hunting for treasures with the whole family. Residents also enjoy easy drives to major concerts and sporting events in Orland and Tampa Bay.

Local Climate

Pasco County enjoys moderate temperatures year round thanks to its location on the Gulf of Mexico. With an average annual temperature of 72 degrees, Pasco County is much more comfortable than many of the inland areas of Florida that see scorching summer heat. However, the humidity in the area can become daunting, especially during warmer months. Comprehensive air conditioning service and AC repair are essential for homeowners and business owners who want to keep inside spaces comfortable on even the muggiest of days.
