While the necessity to provide cool and efficient air conditioning for your Tampa area home goes without saying, Florida’s moderate winters mean homeowners also have to consider the best option for providing comfortable and practical heating. Find out why ductless mini splits are excellent home-comfort options, offering unmatched installation options and delivering energy-efficient heating, cooling and dehumidification solutions.

Ductless Installation Options

Ductless mini splits are air-source heat pumps (or cooling-specific systems) that, with compact redesigned components, don’t use obtrusive and notably inefficient ductwork to deliver comfortable heating, cooling and dehumidification. These are the components:

  • The compressor and condenser components are located outside the home in a small but durable metal cabinet, which connects to the indoor air handlers by a flexible conduit, traversing inconspicuous areas inside walls, the attic or crawl space.
  • The indoor air handlers of ductless mini splits house the evaporator coil and indoor air filtration system. The air handlers are often mounted high on walls to save space. However, the components of ductless mini splits offer many installation options. You can use one air handler to condition a room or small area, or install multiple air handlers to create a zoning system with independent temperature controls.
  • If you are remodeling a room with a hang ceiling, the air handler may be installed flush to resemble a conventional air-supply outlet of a ducted system. Or, sleek cassette air-handlers are available for mounting directly to any ceiling surface. You may also opt for a mini-duct installation which supplies heating, cooling and dehumidification to adjoining rooms, such as a master bedroom and the bathroom or a walk-in closet, with one air handler and a short duct section to each room or area.
  • Since ductless mini splits are designed with high-efficiency compressors and other components to maximize heat exchange for optimum heating and cooling efficiency (HSPF and SEER), the flexible conduit, which houses the refrigerant and condensate lines, and power supply, may extend to lengths of 50 feet to connect the indoor air handlers to the outside compressor and condenser unit. This gives you the freedom to select an inconspicuous location, if desired, for installing the compact outside cabinet.

Practical Heating and Cooling

Ductless mini splits have undergone significant design changes in recent years. These re-designed advanced components of ductless systems deliver greater efficiency, provide more installation options and deliver superior home comfort. Select high-efficiency ductless systems utilize the following components that help drive performance and efficiency, easily surpassing other heating and cooling options, such as baseboard heaters, window A/C units and even conventional heat pumps.

  • Inverter-driven compressors save electricity by operating at multiple speeds, continuously changing to meet real-time heating and cooling demands inside the home. “Dry” mode also helps dehumidify humid Clearwater and St. Petersburg homes when cooling or heating aren’t necessarily required.
  • Multi-speed air handlers provide optimal indoor comfort and efficiency by adjusting airflow to meet comfort needs and to match the rate of heat exchange required of the indoor evaporator coil.
  • Sensors detect temperature fluctuations from the floor to the ceiling, prompting the ductless system to adjust heating and cooling output as needed to consistently maintain the thermostat set point.
  • The evaporator coil is regulated by multiple sensors, too, in order to optimize refrigerant heat exchange and dehumidification.
  • Indoor air quality components include a multi-phase filtration system that neutralizes odors with a carbon filter and helps destroy viruses and bacteria with an anti-bacterial phase, and a washable media filter to capture allergens and other respiratory irritants – a boon for home occupants who must endure Florida’s long allergy seasons.

Home Preparation For Maximum Performance

With any HVAC installation, it’s important to make sure that your home is properly prepared. To maximize all the benefits of comfort and energy savings from your new ductless system, it’s wise to ask your HVAC contractor to perform an energy evaluation prior to installation. And, with the extension of the Federal home-efficiency tax credits (available until the end of 2013), you may be eligible and earn up to $500 for your ductless installation and home-efficiency upgrades.

The energy evaluation pinpoints areas and systems in your home that are wasting energy. Sophisticated tests using infrared scanning and a blower door reveal air leaks and insulation deficiencies. Sealing your home also helps keep humidity outside your home’s insulation barrier, which ultimately affects daily comfort and monthly cooling bills, and may help prevent potential damage caused by moisture and mold, which is all too common in our region.
